Interesting, because the bacteria that work to produce cheese gobble up lactose. However, not being an expert on the production of the myriad of cheeses available, some may have milk or lactose containing products added after those critters have done their work...or it may be that something else entirely in the cheese that was causing your body to revolt.

You are right, given that she likes milk on cereal. Cheese and yogurt don't have lactose so even the intolerant can eat them. Of course the Chinese think we are nuts eating cheese, which to them tastes like dirty socks! Man....I grew up with farm-fresh dairy milk....good stuff. And we buy it from a local dairy and it's great. I can remember skimming the cream off the top of the big ole jar...and putting it in an empty jar with salt etc. and shaking it till it turned to butter. Yummy stuff. From: cathy carpenter <cathyc@rnet.com> Reply-To: gardenchat@hort.net To: gardenchat@hort.net Subject: Re: [CHAT] Holiday Food Date: Tue, 30 Dec 2003 16:03:24 -0600 Most folks of northern European heritage can drink milk throughout their lives, but the vast majority of the human population cannot tolerate milk after the age of 5...they lose the ability to digest milk sugar, lactose. The result? Very uncomfortable cramping and diarrhea. And on my father's side...Scotch....so I love cooked cabbage too....and coleslaw. I just pretty much love cabbage. I cook it all the time...kids love it too...except for Robert's youngest, who is a very picky eater. She doesn't even drink milk.....now that's just WRONG. I can't imagine life without THAT!!! So I buy her the orange juice with vitamin C and D in it. Jesse Rene' Bell Claremore, OK Zone 6
