Re: Rascal Update

I got the Dx from the cardiologist today. Dilated cardiomyopathy of unknown origin, probably congenital. (There are tests to see whether it's from a virus, taurine insufficiency or whatever, but they involve a biopsy and wouldn't tell anything that would help anyway. ) Unusual in a kitten, not much to be done. I told the vet I didn't think there was any point in hurting him more just to be certain. She agreed.

I could tell from the look in the tech's face, and when the cardiologist came back into the room, that it was as bad as I feared. We'll start the recommended taurine supplements. The cardiologist said that they'd take 3 months to work, if they did. I asked if he had 3 months. She didn't think so. So we have some meds to reduce the blood pressure, and some extra Lasix to make him more comfortable for as long as he wants to live.

Oh dear, I am profoundly sorry to hear that. I hope the cardiologist can
recommend some form of treatment for the little guy!

The news is not good.

The vet specialist withdrew 130cc's of fluid from his chest today and did
and
ultrasound of his thorax. The good news was that no tumor was found.

The bad news is that his heart is enlarged, and he's got "significant
heart
disease that has caused congestive heart failure". He's to see the
Cardiologist tomorrow for an echocardiogram to see whether anything can be
done
