Yes I'm here - finally - and I'm looking at 57 messages.
It is curently minus 1 degree w a wind chill of minus 22.
Wind from the west at 18mph and gusting to 28. Seems to be easing a bit, it
was far windier earlier today.
I was able to get Cable TV by Sat am, but no internet until now, Sun night.
I came home from work Friday to a huge pile of limbs in my driveway. It
looked as if someone had pulled everything from the street and placed it in
my drive. Harumph! So I pulled it all to the curbstrip. Saturday I worked
about 4 hours in the yard (it was warmer than today) dragging limbs from the
back out to the curb. The maple limbs that came down in back brought down
the 30 foot climbing rose with it. I had to cut the gnarled mess apart
before I could drag pieces out. Also lost chunks of a redbud and a birch as
well as bits from a few other trees. There is now a 40 foot long, 5 ft
high, 7 ft wide pile of limbs out front that hopefully the city will deal
with.
We had over 110,000 people without power on Saturday. I think that is now
down to about 40,000. A neighbor stayed with me last night as she has no
power and they say probably not until Wednesday at the earliest. A neighbor
helped me cut some of the weight off the birch limb that was broken (but not
completely) over my electric line, but we didn't have a ladder tall enough
to cut the limb off. I have a telescoping pole trimmer, but couldn't find
the attachment for the saw. I found it today and my exH came over and sawed
it off. That's a relief. So I think I'm safe.
Still, I'm going to see about getting some work done this spring to clear
stuff away from the lines. Parts of the birch have broken and are hanging
down over the transformer.

Brrr. To my amazement, it's been 28 windless degrees since about 5:30
this AM. Beginning to feel like I'm stuck in a time warp of some kind.

currently at 4pm, our temp is minus 3 with wind chill minus 29.
Actually this
is the best it has been,..... we have 35-40 mph winds which is
making it
brutal out there. Got about an inch to two inches of snow (hard to
tell with
the drifting) last night.
So far (fingers crossed) the trees haven't lost any limbs yet. I
figured the
wind would take them out....
So far we only flickered power a couple of times. But our lines are
underground. We have no power at work....or so my answering machine
said...

We had snow most of the day yesterday--about 4 inches accumulated--
then last night freezing rain, so this morning the snow is covered
with a thin crust of ice. Have to say the dogwood outside my window is
spectacular, like something Steuben would make.

We still have snow on the ground 16 F this am on my way to work.
Sunny part of the day, so the roads got slushy. Frozen again when
I
came home just now, 16F again, roads just a bit slick, but home
with no problem. Took it slow.
I saw our winter friend the woodpecker opening walnuts in the back
yard last week. Snow is deeper, but (s)he will be back if nothing
else is available. I see 2 or 3 every winter. Sometimes when the
snow is deep, they dive in & fan their wings like they're
taking a
dust bath & uncover the nuts so they can break them open. The
little chickadees wait until they're done, then pick up any
crumbs.

It always amuses me that, for juncos, my area defines
"flying
south for the winter". Took part in our area's
Audubon
society
Christmas bird count today. We logged about 30 species. We
saw a
flock of nine bluebirds and logged 4 different raptors. More
American tree sparrows than I could have imagined. My only
disappointment was no turkeys!

About six inches of snow here overnight, and the

The
one who used to come did a really bad job - pushed piles
of
snow up against the garage doors so we couldn't get
the
cars
out, etc. This one did a much better job, but I hope he
is
more
prompt in the future. We are not on a town road so the
neighborhood has to contract with a private plower. Those
down
near the main road don't want to pay for the whole
road,
so the
four houses up at our end have to bear the most of it.
Interestingly, yesterday juncos showed up ahead of the
storm.
I'd been watching for them for a couple of weeks, but
hadn't
seen any. Yesterday there was a flock - must have been
more
than a dozen - in the backyard. I guess that's why
they're
sometimes called "snow birds."
