currently at 4pm, our temp is minus 3 with wind chill minus 29.
Actually this
is the best it has been,..... we have 35-40 mph winds which is making it
brutal out there. Got about an inch to two inches of snow (hard to
tell with
the drifting) last night.
So far (fingers crossed) the trees haven't lost any limbs yet. I
figured the
wind would take them out....
So far we only flickered power a couple of times. But our lines are
underground. We have no power at work....or so my answering machine
said...

I saw our winter friend the woodpecker opening walnuts in the back
yard last week. Snow is deeper, but (s)he will be back if nothing
else is available. I see 2 or 3 every winter. Sometimes when the
snow is deep, they dive in & fan their wings like they're
taking a
dust bath & uncover the nuts so they can break them open. The
little chickadees wait until they're done, then pick up any
crumbs.

It always amuses me that, for juncos, my area defines "flying
south for the winter". Took part in our area's Audubon
society
Christmas bird count today. We logged about 30 species. We saw a
flock of nine bluebirds and logged 4 different raptors. More
American tree sparrows than I could have imagined. My only
disappointment was no turkeys!
