Found it. Dirr tells us: "Typophysis is the term applied to
different growth characteristics when different parts of the plant are used as
cuttings. Orthotropic refers to cuttings that grow vertically; plagiotropic
to those that grow laterally." This phenomenon is especially distinct in
Taxus cuspidata var. capitata, Picea pungens var. glauca, etc. A case where
nature dominates over nurture.
