Here the law is the same as in Oklahoma. If your mailbox hurts Junior when he runs over it, you are to blame. Mailboxes here have to be breakaway, too.

That's insane! That's not the law here in NY. Here the kid would be
responsible for the damage civilly and if he intentionally smashed the mailbox, he
could be charged criminally with a property intrusion and destruction
offense, like criminal mischief or a similar offense.
