Regardless of the tools available to us, I feel it is important to understand the math behind it. Yes, people should be taught how to use tim-saving devices, but they should also be taught how to use their noggin. It's good exercise.

In the age of solar-powered calculators, they still teach long division? I nearly fell off my chair when Ms Fatma told me she needed to be able to find a number's square root--and her test was for primary grades [K-3].On Feb 8, 2008, at 1:04 PM, David Franzman wrote:Will do Jesse and thanks. We're just really looking forward to seeing him again. He's a good kid.Next he goes to S.C. for 18 months and since Linda and I have never been and would love to visit we'll be dropping in on Andrea and her dogs. Ok, tomorrow I have the big teacher test we have to take here called the CBest Test. Wish me luck. Does anybody know how to do long division? I've forgotten. That graduation is pretty emotional for the parental units.David Franzman <dfranzma@pacbell.net> wrote: Hey folks We could use some guidance here. Next week we're travelling to Chicago to watch my son graduate from basic training and since the only time I have visited that city was when I was going somewhere else I'm looking for a few suggestions that Linda, Jason and I would enjoy visiting. I'm sure there isn't much in the garden line this time of year but that wouldn't make Linda and Jason overly happy anyway. So, for you folks that know the windy city and can make some restaurant suggestions that would be great.
