Regardless of the tools available to us, I feel it is important to understand the math behind it. Yes, people should be taught how to use tim-saving devices, but they should also be taught how to use their noggin. It's good exercise.

In the age of solar-powered calculators, they still teach long division? I nearly fell off my chair when Ms Fatma told me she needed to be able to find a number's square root--and her test was for primary grades [K-3].
