Re: what kind of mulch???

I never thought the rubber mulch was intended for gardens. I thought it was for use in play areas. I didn't see much harm in that until you pointed out the "bits of steel wire". The oil bleed sound pretty nasty too.

Yeah, that mulch made from old shredded tires is a beyond bad idea. It was introduced with great fanfare--until someone pointed out that it likely bleeds oil as it slowly decomposes in the sun. Much of it is also full of little bits of steel wire, another not-too-bright thing to put in the garden. I've always been marginally surprised that they didn't figure out some way to dye it red, too.

I was watching some TV garden show where they used shredded rubber
mulch. They were congratulating themselves because of the recycling
aspects but I just couldn't fathom why you'd want to put rubber into
your soil. I don't know how gardening works there but at my house, bits
of mulch sink into the soil as I dig or gets raked into the lawn, or
just moves around. Sounded like a seriously bad idea to me.
Or there's the colored glass mulch I saw in a magazine, but I think you
were supposed to put landscape fabric down first.

Yes- really I just don't want to use anything that is bad for my soil
(those weird colored wood chips just freak me out- who wants dye in
their garden!)

Spring is here! If they'd had tomato plants at Capital Nursery, I
would have bought them today : )

Anyway- I want to mulch my gardens well this year (trying to save
money on the water bill!)- so looking for advice. What kind of much
is best for water conservation, good for the soil, won't breakdown in

only one season, etc.??? Shredded, nuggets, bark, cedar,
redwood????? Anybody know anything about this?

Theresa
