Re: Harbinger

Kathy, the most striking thing about a filbert/hazelnut orchard is its winter silhouette--a forest of large contorted trees, not quite as contorted as their relatives [Harry Lauder's walking sticks] but almost. A local nursery--I can't remember which one--recently announced that it had developed a dwarf filbert for home gardens that was every bit as contorted as the walking sticks.

You all are making me long for some sign of spring! Today we woke up to snow on the ground and ice on the pond again. And we have not seen the first
robin yet. I can't blame them for not showing up! Jim, I so enjoy your
observations on the world. Don't think I've ever seen a filbert orchard. Enjoy your
sunny days. Kathy

My gauge for spring is when the willows start leafing out...started last week. Daffodils are blooming...I remember when they didn't do that until
March.

Had to go to south Salem today so used that as an excuse to wander
home on the back roads. Beautiful day, sunny, high near 60. All the
filbert orchards, of which there are many, are in full catkin. It must
be spring.
