Kitty,
I have both Muhlenbergia capillaris and M. fillipes here in zone 6 in an
open bed normally mulched with 1 to 2 inches of bark mulch but no additional
protection. I think they would handle your Z5 garage. Both are really
beautiful and are worth trying. I have noticed that bunnies prefer them over
other grasses.
