kitty, the u.s. botanic garden grows all it's own stuff and they don't sell anything, either. they place the overages in congressional offices and other once-public buildings in washington. Maybe bbg has a similar arrangement with the city [as in, The City].

So, Mariana, If they propagate everything they grow, but don't sell any of it, what do they do with it? I would expect if they take cuttings from a shrub, they'd propagate at least one full tray. When a perennial needs dividing, they'd only have growing space for the ones they need. Are all the extras farmed out to other conservatories? I'm really happy to hear that you enjoyed it. And of course thank you for the compliments. Donna, I am taking a class in Plant Propagation as part of my Certificate in Horticulture. The class is taught by the head propagator. His job is to propagate everything that grows in the garden with the exception of orchids. The BBG propagates everything in house including some of the orchids, be it through seed, root, divisions or cuttings. The plants that they sell on occasion either through special sales or in the gift shop are not sown or grown by BBG, they are actually donated or purchased plants for sales purposes only.
