Actually, Sacramento considers itself the Camellia Capital of Just About Every Place! Complete with festivals and shows.

Theresa, can you grow camellias? They only need the sun in the winter

Mine survives very nicely in the shade the rest of the year. Even if
your soil isn't heavily acidic, I mulch mine w/ a nice 2" layer of
coffee grounds salvaged from the coffaholics at work and it seems quite
happy. I do this once a month. The foliage is very beautiful and glossy,
I get lots of compliments on mine.

Ok- since we are talking about shade-loving shrubs-
I need one that can tolerate dry shade (actually it gets late afternoon
sun). I was considering a California Bay? Suggestions?

Hello Donna,
That one is a toughie..... Only one pick???? there is a sheet of paper
here that is two sided listing of trees and shrubs. Probably be the native
Sambucus pubens, or Red Elderberry. I was not aware of that one... is it a
shade loving shrub and has clusters of bright red berries.
Both JoAn and I liked some of the new Smoke Trees ... such as Day Dream
Smoketree... Cotinus..
Limelight hydrangea and Endless Summer was in the talk... ones everyone
has been talking about in the past.
