Eva,

Why don't you try heavenly bamboo (Nandina) instead?  You will get the
look of a small tree or shrub without the invasive quality of bamboo. I
have a few varieties.  NANDINA 'PLUM PASSION' has lovely purple foliage
and attractive berries. It's perfect for a small property!
