Donna, I don't think it is the heat on the chain link that is the
problem. what you described is a common dieback problem on Clematis,
though just now I don't know the name or reason. Will have to look
around some. It's happened to my C. henryi both years since I put it in
and it's climbing a Redbud. Has also happened to the two Cs out front of
house, but never to the two I have on a chain link fence in full sun
that have been there about 12 years. It's not the fence.
