Donna, do you have adequate soil moisture in that location.  I always place a 
black plastic landscape pot (bottom cut out) screwed down in the soil around 
the base of the vine & fill with shredded cedar.  This keeps the soil cool & 
moist.
    Have you tried any of the non-vining type?
