RE: drought

Pam,
Have you tried penstemons? Many of them seem to take dry conditions in
stride, although I don't know if they'd handle no water at all. I water my
dry garden about once a month in summer. Penstemons, erigonum, salvias,
yuccas, chilopsis, opuntia cactus, russian sage, texas ranger, all doing
well.
How about rabbitbush (chrysothamnus)? It is a native here, and survives
quite well on just a few inches of water in the spring. You'd have to trim
it now and again as it isn't the most attractive thing left unpruned, but it
is pretty in bloom in the fall, bees love it.
The LA Times had a big article about your drought last weekend. It's truly
disastrous.
