Re: weather

I think the cacti here are opuntia. Mine looked dead after we went from 70s to -10F overnight one fall. Everything was flat dessicated, looked like a total loss, but it came back. Lost about half its bulk, but I was surprized how much of the part that looked freeze-dried, survived. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Johnson Cyndi D Civ 95 CG/SCSRT" <cyndi.johnson@edwards.af.mil>

It got seriously cold. They are saying almost all the citrus crop -
oranges, tangerines, lemons etc - is ruined. The avocados are gone (and
we were just talking about those). Strawberries are gone. I think there
was also a lot of damage to things like lettuce and other greens.
According to the papers the trees will be okay.
I don't expect a lot of plant damage at my house but I haven't gone out
to take inventory yet. I would not be surprised if my big opuntia cactus
is dead, it wasn't looking happy before all this. But we'll see about
everything else. I was wondering about all the rosemary but the biggest
bushes look fine (so far); the prostrate rosemary will likely need to be
trimmed back.

just how cold did it get in 'crop' country?... what crop are we talking
about since Calif has a few that I can think of...

And while we are talking
California... anyone heard from David recently? I sure hope his
greenhouses have the option to turn on heat...

Pam did you stay home? Looks like you are getting hit again.....

Yesterday was the first snow fall of the year for me and heard something
about the first time winter season with 44 days of no snow or somekinda
record we set. Interesting year to say the least- wonder how many
plants I am going to loose over this. We have had plenty of rain, as
they also claimed we would have had feet of snow if it was in that
state....
Donna- where it is getting cold ... 13 for a low tonight, which really
isn't bad for here....

Interesting--I though those
prototype smog machines had gone away. If they only lose the crop, the
crop-insurance cavalry will ride to their rescue; but if they lose the
trees, too, man that's a whole different thing.

They did indeed. The nursery where I worked here still uses
smudge pots
when frost is threatened. Think California did away with the
pots some
years ago, though. Last time I was in the groves out there in
winter,
they all seemed to be using overhead sprinklers.

No kidding. I seem to remember many

that right or am I hallucinating again?
