The only door-to-door we get is a very occasional Jehova's Witness
and about once a year a strange-looking young person getting
contributions for a local ecological concern - I forget it's name.
We're really off the beaten track, up a steep hill on a lane off
the main road.
The ones we do get with great frequency are the telephone
solicitations. All the telephone-television suppliers solicit us
about twice a week. The one that really ticks me off, though, is
the Police Benevolent Society, which solicits us aggressively on my
unlisted telephone - by name. I asked how they got my number -
they said "We have our ways." They have told me it would be
beneficial for me when I got a ticket if I was on their contributor
list. Can you imagine that? If this were some other organization,
I would report such to the police, but since this is the police, I
don't know where to turn.

Anybody else noticed this? We've had a big increase in door-to-door
salesmen--from zero 6 months ago to two-three a day now. We've also had
four Verizon salesmen in the last 5 day [not counting Sunday, of
course] peddling their new FiOS [fiber-optic system] internet/cable
channel/long distance hookup service. Since they tore up most of the
front yards around here when they installed the fiber-optic cable,
you'd think they would be smart enough to let the neighborhood ire
quell before bragging about what they did. But since their cable
competitor here is Comcast, it's become a tussle between dumb and
dumber.
