I think there is another basic problem. The young man had mental issues for some time. The same is true for many who have been involved in senseless killings like Virginia Tech. We seem to provide little to identify and get help for those who obviously need it until after they have injured/killed others or themselves. Arizona's new budget is going to cut mental health. In our area, surveys have shown that 1/3 of the homeless have mental problems. Many of these are also veterans. Our local jail has one block that houses the mentally ill who are picked up for causing problems as if jail is the proper place for them. My mother-in-law was killed by a mentally ill person who sprayed a crowd thinking he was target practicing. He legally purchased his firearm from the local Sears. We are ignoring this problem because it is difficult to resolve but until we do, these incidents are going to continue whether we improve our civility or not. B, who is on her soap box today. Thanks for sharing this. My spouse was very distressed to hear of this violent act. He puts on a tough, cynical front but things like this really shake him up. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Zemuly Sanders" <zemuly@comcast.net> To: <gardenchat@hort.net> Sent: Tuesday, January 11, 2011 3:55 PM Subject: Re: [CHAT] OT: Something to think about as Americans >I think so, too.
