Replying to my own reply, here. I got two plants, one from
Canada, the other as a gift from Wolfgang Oehme, who with
partner James van Sweeden is a fairly well-known landscape
architect in the DC area. I planted the two side by side
and watched. When the Oehme gift looked as though it would
overwhelm the Canadian, I dug the latter up with spading
fork, axe and pickaxe. It (the _little_ one) made a
huge woody rootstock.
Had I know originally what it would become, I would
have tilled up an area in the back yard about 10 feet
in diameter, amended, and planted the Oehme gift in
the center. Well watered and fertilized, it ought to
be a remarkable specimen...
