RE: can we talk container gardening?

Kitty,

Many of the containers are the light weight type. I used to buy one or
two a year when they were on sale at one of our local garden shops. The
tan urn is also a foam variety, but the large white urn I won in a
raffle this spring. It's made out of some heavy plastic or fiberglass.
I am now buying this type when I see them for a good price as the light
weight "foam" t I've found two rusty looking types aren't holding up
great. The uppermost edge usually wears off. This is not a great
problem as the plants usually cover the edge rather quickly. I found two
rusty-looking urns in the last two years at Target. I probably have
enough planters for now. I do a water garden in one of the rusty urns.
I try to us water loving plants from my garden as water plants are soooo
pricey.

I used the Persian Shield last year too. I didn't winter it over, but
another teacher in school had hers on her windowsill all year. I take a
variety of coleus plants to school with me. They aren't poisonous, so
they are good to use around my preschoolers. I over winter about 30 or
more varieties of coleus, four types of plectranthus, a few
alternantheras, lantana, verbena, reuella, geraniums, some herbs, and
some other oddities. It makes my classroom and home very homey!

Great combinations, Chris. Some quiet, some bold. Re the containers,
are some of those thelightweight types? The urns looked like
heavyweights. I really enjoyed the colors in Coleus 'Occold Shield',
Strobilanthes (Persian Shield. Kitty
