Marge,
We did discuss this before about resetting them.  However, that issue -
raising out of the ground - for me was an every few years problem which,
thanks to you I now know to reset them.  Now I'm wondering if the petering
out and fewer leaves is, as you said,  because I have them in too much
shade.
I have found I've had a little better luck with some xHeucherellas and
Tiarellas - I suppose they are more fond of shade.  Thanks for your input,
