I was just out sitting on the new garden bench in the shade, sipping a, hummm, iced tea, and enjoying the breeze. Without warning, the sun found a hole in the canopy, popped through, and proceeded to fry me [it's 93 degree out there]. Gotta do something about that canopy. On the north side is the tree-shrub with the gourd vine; on the east side is a large clump of giant bird-of-paradise with its large, banana-type leaves; on the south is a young ligustrum tree, and behind and beyond it, scheffleras, eucalyptus, and a lot of other greenery yo block the sun. It's the west side that's the problem. There are some large pines on my neighbor's vacant lot, but they are sort of south of where they are needed, so they only block the sun until, say, 2:30 PM. I have a small ligustrum in that area--maybe 6 feet by a couple--that should eventually branch out and make a canopy. In the meantime, I guess I ought to stay out of there between 2 and 5 PM.
