Hi again, I think that if you use some bleach anddribble it into the joints and crossings, leave it for a while then rinse it with water it will take care of the mildew. Also some of the KILZ products have a mildewcide in them, take a look at the label. Good luck, Rich

tipping the chair for horizontal surfaces doesn't seem easily do-able, as the cleaner has to stay on the surface for 10 minutes. I'd have to do it in quite a few installments. However, I think the first application did do a really good job and the way it lightens the wood actually makes it easier to see where it didn't catch all the mildew. So I think if I reapply to those areas, I might just get it all after a second go around. I noticed scrubbing tough areas did help. The product simply said scrubbing not necessary, it didn't say do not scrub. I use a scrubbrush, so I'll wear long sleeves next time.I think I can eventually get it all from the accessible surfaces, but not sure about getting areas hidden where wood pieces cross each other. Will mildew hidden in corner crevices and wood crossings create a problem later? I don't think I want to dismantle the entire chair.Kitty neIN, Zone 5----- Original Message ----- From: "Richard Apking" <redfour@omni-tech.net>To: <gardenchat@hort.net> Sent: Sunday, July 27, 2008 8:59 PM Subject: Re: [CHAT] mildewHi Kitty, Would it be possible to tip the chair so that you just worked on horizontal surfaces? This would take several partial applications; it's a technique I've used for stripping items in the past. Also I've thinned the deck cleaner with no apparent harm. Whatever you do, use a long handled brush so your exposed skin doesn't come in contact with the deck cleaner. Kilz would be an excellent primer for your project.Kitty wrote:I have a very old adirondack chair, made of cedar. It was sort of old when I got it 20 yrs ago. I decided that maybe I could paint it blue to add a bright spot in the back of the garden. My plan was to clean, prime, paint, polyurathene. I started the first step today. I bought Olympic deck cleaner w/out reading it. Says it must be used on flat surfaces, leave on 5-10 min, no scrubbing, then rinse. I ended up scrubbing anyway. Got it fairly clean but I don't think it got all the mildew because of all the slanting boards. I may try a second cleaning, but stilllllll.....So, does anyone have anything to suggest? Is this a stupid project? Is there something I'm forgetting?Kitty neIN, Zone 5 --------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE GARDENCHAT No virus found in this incoming message.Checked by AVG - http://www.avg.com Version: 8.0.138 / Virus Database: 270.5.6/1575 - Release Date: 7/26/2008 4:18 PM--------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE GARDENCHAT No virus found in this incoming message.Checked by AVG - http://www.avg.com Version: 8.0.138 / Virus Database: 270.5.6/1576 - Release Date: 7/27/2008 4:16 PM--------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE GARDENCHAT No virus found in this incoming message.Checked by AVG - http://www.avg.com Version: 8.0.138 / Virus Database: 270.5.6/1577 - Release Date: 7/28/2008 6:55 AM
