Daivd, I did ask the Ortho rep about which product to use on your fuschia mites. Of course, he had never heard of fuschia mites. He did suggest calling the "800" number on the back of any insecticidal product and ask the company. Sorry I'm no more help than anybody else.

Hey Ok, well I cut back my infected fuschia. I would prefer to not usechemicals if I can help it so lets see if this works. Zem, if you do hear ofa remedy I would like to know and so would my father. My father lives inMonterey or very near it and it is perfect fuschia and begonia weather. Hehas the most glorious begonias you can imagine. Anyway he has purchased Idon't know how many fuschias and they keep getting this mite and so he ends upthrowing them away because he can't get rid of the mites. So if somebody comes up with the right chemical let me know. He sprays like Dr.Strangelove...there is no pesticide too cancer causing for him. He's 81 nowso nothing I tell him will change his ways. We just got a load of fuschia from Hines Horticulture in CA. I'll have to scrutinize the plants. zem----- Original Message ----- From: "David Franzman"<dfranzma@pacbell.net> To: <gardenchat@hort.net> Sent: Monday, July 21, 2008 10:27 PM Subject: Re: [CHAT] fuschiaHey thanks Jim, very goodinformation. Iam amember of the local fuchsia society, which manages a large fuchsiabank ofthousands of different varieties of fuchsia as part of a larger87-acrebotanic garden. The garden has been plagued with this mite forseveralyears now. The mites lives inside the foliage, specifically inyoung growthparts such as new buds or new growth shoots. Saliva from thelittlemicroscopic critters causes distortion followed by deformation of the plant parts that eventually will become very severe and overtime willsignificantly damage the health of the fuchsia or even kill it alltogether. The mite is HIGHLY infectious, as it is easily spread from one plant toanother (method of transmission is unclear, although Isuspect hummingbirds play a role) and the mites are dammed difficult to eradicate. I myselfhavebeen battling fuchsia mite for several years with varying degrees of success. If fuchsia mite is caught within the first season of infectionandthe plant is sufficiently small enough for you to be able to spray the surface of all the leaves, then an insecticide that works systemically can kill it if sprayed in 2 or 3 successive and regular applications. You can find a suitable insecticide at any Home Depot or Lowes in the gardencenter.Any insecticide that specifically says it kills fuchsia mite andis asystemic will do the trick, but make sure the bottle specificallysays itwill "kill fuchsia mite" and not just simply "kills mites." Ifyou haveother fuchsia currently not suffering from this problem, then youdo notwant to delay in dealing with it, in fact the other fuchsia areprobablyalready infected but the symptoms have not yet show up. If you dodecide tospray then make sure you wear adequate protection as recommendedon thelabel and spray all other fuchsia according to the applicationdirections aswell as the infected plant in case they too are infected. One last and veryimportant note: MAKE SURE YOUR FUCHIAS ARE WELL WATEREDAND ALL LEAFSURFACES ARE DRY BEFORE APPLYING. DO NOT SPRAY THE SOILSURROUNDING THEPLANT, AS THAT WILL KILL THE ROOTS. TRY NOT TO ALLOW TOOMUCH SPRAY TO DRIPFROM THE FOLIAGE TO THE SOIL SO THE ROOTS WILL NOT BEDAMAGED. DO NOT WATERTHE FUCHSIA UNTIL THE INSECTICIDE HAS HAD A CHANCETO DRY ON THE SURRFACEOF THE LEAFS. ONLY APPLY WHEN TEMPURATES ARE MILD. Good luck Hope it helps.
