Used to be a big one that hung around the plantation. It ate squirrels, which was okay by me.

Well, in defense of my mother in law killing one - it had eaten 20 eggs! They had 9 children in that family and relied on the eggs for food...and she wasn't about to let it get by with eating 20 of her eggs. Some of those chicken/rat snakes can get HUGE!! My mother killed one when I lived out on the farm in Enid, Oklahoma. She didn't know what kind of snake it was, but it was slithering up the pole on our swing set and was already at the top of the swingset...and it's tail had not even left the grass yet. Dad said it was about 8 feet long...and was upset that mom killed it. He would have put it in the barn to eat the mice. Of course we don't have much wildlife here. It sure would have been one of those adrenaline moments for me too. Ican't imagine wanting the eggs bad enough to kill the snake and squeezethe eggs out though. It felt really, really good. It was hot and humid and my clothes were soaked by the time I came in, but I felt better inside. Just being outside and focusing on pulling Bermuda grass and where to plant something keeps me grounded. And for some reason, my thoughts are more "gentle" out there. I can let things roll off my shoulders. My husband and kids don't get it. They can't understand WHY in the WORLD I would rather spend my evening out there than inside where it's cool. Then I went out to my chicken house to gather eggs...and for the FIRST time since I've owned chickens...I found a snake in there, and it had eaten allmy eggs and was coiled up in a box. Freaked me out. The "garden- zen"moment was kinda LOST after that!! (laughing). I picked it up with a pitch fork while my husband caught it in a fishing net and we put it in a cage. Gonna move him out to the country somewhere, otherwise he'll just keep coming back to Chez Bell for dinner. My grandparents and mother-in-law would have killed it and squeezed the eggs back out...but there were only a few in him, and I don't have the heart tokill it. They aren't poisonous. I have no idea what kind of snake itis though. Chicken Snakes are shiny and black...almost blue/black. This one is brown with some weird markings on it.On Wed, Jul 8, 2009 at 3:53 PM, Pam Evans<gardenqueen@gmail.com> wrote:Yep - that's what mother says - this too shall pass.
