It might have been the prayers. Or maybe the offerings to the god,
Philadelphus, who kept 'mocking' my efforts to coax the species into bloom.
I'd given that shrub 3 different, good spots and it just kept shooting out
long green stems. Out it went after 10 years. In spring 2003 I ordered P.
Snow Velvet from Heronswood to try again. I think the reason it bloomed now
rather than the previos 2 years had nothing to do with my efforts. I think
it was just finally established enough and a little older. Still, it needs
work as it is too floppy. I want it more upright.
