That is terribly confusing to non-Idahoans, Judy. You are saying they use
the botanical name for the genus of Lilacs as a common name for a Mock
Orange?
And... if they named it after a guy named Lewis, then why isn't it called
Lewis? (or Lewisia to make it even stranger)? Was his name Syringa Lewis?

Mock orange. Syringa, Idaho's state flower is Philadelphis lewisii, named
for the explorer who found it here. I noticed this morning that newly
opened
blooms on the single are more fragrant than the older blooms.
