The best thing I've found for deer flies are the flesh-colored sticky patches that you put onto the back of your cap. The deer flies make a dive for them and get stuck. I hate wearing a cap, but I hate deerfly bites even more.
I'm afraid I have a gleeful reaction to seeing them trying to get loose. If I get a deerfly bite, it swells at least to baseball size. If I get one between the eyes, I can't open them for several days, even if I get a prednisone shot.
