Union station in Chicago isn't in the greatest of neighborhoods....
   
Do they have a mega bus in your area? I know they are basically a tour
bus but they are reasonable and still leaves the driving to someone
else.

   
A few years ago we did the steam engine trains throughout Colorado and
New Mexico for 7 days. Enjoyable trip and got to see areas of the
country that you would have missed via driving the interstates.

you want a bed it can be up to 400+ more added to the basic. If I chose 
to go through Chicago it is 143 and takes 23-24 including 2 layovers, one in 
Kansas City and one in Chicago. I would still need to rent a car so I am 
not too sure that would be very good.
I would love to do it once just for fun... and see the country.
