Re: Peonies

I just love peonies!  I totally missed mine blooming this year.  That just
happened to be the week I was gone to the Chelsea flower show.  Which was
great but I still missed my peonies. 
I try to take in as many as possible because of how fast they fall apart
outside.  I didn't for years then someone convinced me to try cutting them. 
Since that year I have cut and cut so that I can enjoy them longer.  I just
really wish they bloomed for longer.  Maybe I should research different blooms
to see if there are some that bloom early and some later. 
What varities do you have Auralie?

This has been a most unusual spring, with roller-coaster weather -
two different spikes up to 90 degrees for a day with unusually cool
weather before, between and after, and pretty dry most of the time.
It has been very overcast most of the time, but very little real
percipitation.  Now that I have finished with most of the pressing
things I've been involved with for the past month and thought I
could finally get to the garden, it is pouring rain and thundering.
This the most significant rain we have had all spring.  I'm delighted
that it is raining, for we needed it sorely, but why today?  Why not
last week when I couldn't work outside anyway?

Anyway, for whatever reason and despite the untoward weather,
things have bloomed more heavily this spring than I can remember.
all the early trees and shrubs - forsythia, dogwood, redbud, cherry,
crabapple, viburnum, etc. were spectacular.  The rhododendrons
and azaleas bloomed heavily above the level that deer could
reach, though the deer had stripped them up to about five feet.
This week has been the week of the peonies, and they are
fabulous - or were until this rain.  I'm sure that many of them
will be beaten down and spoiled by this heavy rain.  Yesterday
I counted more than 25 blooms on my 'Gai Paree' and that was
after I had already picked quite a few.  I have brought in large
bunches of ten or twelve different blooms twice now, and also I
took such a bunch to my club meeting yesterday.  Just showing
off.  A couple of the early ones are already past, and there are
a couple more that haven't opened yet, but on the whole, I can't
remember a finer peony year.  I don't know if we can thank global
warming for the remarkable bloom this year, but whatever is
responsible, I think it's great.  I just hope it isn't followed by an
overheated summer.
