Not seedllings. There were 2 groups of shoots on the north side. I gave a little tug to one group and they pulled right off the thick root that was just below ground.
Some one else told me it might be Rose Rosette Disease but, though there ar esome similarities, it doesn't seem right. According to MOBOT, RRD is transmitted by a mite that travels passively in the wind. Transmission typically occurs between the months of May through mid-July. Symptoms from new infections usually start appearing in mid-July. As far as I know the rose was fine last year, though of course, I wasn't able to inspect all the branches high up in the tree.
You are right Judy. It is congested. I should thin them out. I'm also concerned about them starving out the "good shoot". The scraggly leaves seem to be taking on a more normal shape, but totally different from the "right" leaves.

Where you have one shoot that looks like the original & multiple other stemsthat don't, I wonder if the others may be seedlings. I have many seedling roses from birds (or squirrels) eating rose hips in my trees. Can you digaround to see if there is a common root to these? Maybe trim off the reddishshoots on the side with the one that looks 'right" and leave a few on the other side of the tree? That might give each a chance, protecting the gray green one without destroying all of the others. That looks crowded in any case & I'd be wanting to thin them a bit anyway.----- Original Message ----- From: "Kitty" <kmrsy@comcast.net>To: <gardenchat@hort.net> Sent: Sunday, June 14, 2009 11:26 AM Subject: [CHAT] rambling roseI think I mentioned b4 that my Rosa 'Paul's Himalayan Musk Ramber' took a terrible hit last December in a storm. It had been a 30 footer, rising up the center of a Norway Maple and then out over the canopy. When I wrote afew months ago I was concerned about when to prune it and the concensus wasto wait until after it bloomed. Well, it was completely shot, there's essentially nothing left. New shoots are coming from the base which is on the south side of thetree. New shoots are also rising on the north side of the tree, apparentlyfrom roots that had circled around to that side. However, almost all the new shoots have scraggly, wavy, reddish leaves. Only one shoot resembles the original rose. I had thought that this rambler was an own-root rose, not grafted, so I am puzzled at the appearance of these new shoots. What do you think I should do now?
