Re: Persian Shield Flower

I've seen plenty of Coleus flower spikes Jim. And you're right, they do
look similar. I had thought they were in the same family but they're not.
Strobilanthes is in the Acanthaceae family and Solenostemon (Coleus) and
Plectranthus are in the Lamiaceae family. The Persian Shield flower is, I
don't know, maybe 50 times larger than a coleus flower. A list of other
family members of Acanthaceae family can be viewed at:
http://www.rbgkew.org.uk/cgi-bin/web.dbs/genlist.pl?ACANTHACEAE
but the only ones I recognize offhand are Justicia, Pachystachys, Ruellia,
and Thungergia, though to my untrained eye, I don't see any family
resemblance. I'm sure you'd recognize many more than I would.
