Donna, I'm glad you have decided to take the trip. I know you will enjoy it.
Since you plan to rent a car and explore, why don't you get a 4 wheel drive
and go through some of the passes.  There's a great road southwest of Silver
City that goes over to Leadville.  You have so much to see. Also Rocky
Mountain National Park is close by to the north, and Golden is a great place
to visit with back roads that go to the town (neat town but I can't think of
the name) where the University of Colorado is located.   It's on the dirt
back roads that  you will find the glorious wildflowers.  Verona
