We've had a lot of stuff stolen from the nursery, but more often stolen from a job site if the install isn't completed and the plants just sit around over night. But we've also had them dig up newly installed plants and cart them off.
One of the developers we landscape for recently caught a woman in one of his condominium complexes digging up plants from around other buildings and re-planting them around her building. She agreed to buy replacements rather than have him press charges. And then the maintenance company hauled her transplants to the dump.

We are discussing making up brochures ( pay at the nature center, get
your money back if you return) for folks to id plants. This will be a
lot of work trying to graph out where the plants are so folks can relate
to them. If I ever get the time, we will probably do that, but can't see
that happening anytime soon.
We also loose many plants yearly too. Seems folks think that since it is
a public place, they are welcome to anything :( Some day I will catch
someone doing this and they will get fined!

I remember you mentioning that before. I find that appalling. Why wouldn't they just write the name down? We've had no trouble having ourtaken, though we have had a few plants taken. The Hort Ed now ispressingfarthe idea of 'theming' our gardens - which means statuary. The Patio garden has been doing this with an Alice in Wonderland Theme. On Garden Walk Days they hold a Tea Party and sometimes have a rabbit for kids to pet. Sono one has walked off with the AiW statuary, but it could happen. Iam inthe 'Propagation' Group, which I prefer to call by its original nameofabout'Nursery' (because we do very little propagation, 95% is small plants brought in and grown on in our nursery beds for sale). I've thoughtusing Nursery Rhymes for our 6 beds. I'd like to lend my 18 inch turnofthe century (19th to 20th) style cat and his fiddle to one of thebeds, theybut I'm afraid someone would walk off with it.

Problem we had was everyone was taking the darn labels..... whetherthewere just the B name or anything. Drove us nuts!
Donna
I like to see good labeling, too. Sounds like these folks went---------------------------------------------------------------------extramile. I think if a public place can only do minimal labeling itshould bebotanical names. The rest is gravy.
