Re: Hydrangeas (was Wisteria question)

I have some really awesome hydrangeas. The only one that has ever given me a problem is the variegated one. I joined the Mid-south Hydrangea Society last year so I'm sure I'll soon be an expert. <:LOL>

I purchased the two I have specifically because the garden center said (as
did the descriptive material on the plant) it would weather zone 5 winters.
Hmmm. It is under a large old cottonwood but gets the morning sun from the
East and a good deal of mid-day filtered sun from the South. Where it is,
it doesn't get a lot of wind and it doesn't look like it has died back to
the ground. I'll keep a closer watch on it this spring.

Thanks for the info and your experience, Cyndi!

Blessings,
Bonnie

For two years I had a nice hydrangea in the corner underneath the office
window. But there was this huge juniper threatening to overgrow it. After
taking a look at the front of the house we got rid of that juniper plus a
couple others, which vastly improved the look of the front, but must have
taken away some kind of wind/sun/cold protection from the hydrangea. It
promptly started to shrink over the summer and died to the ground that
winter. I've not been able to get another one to grow as nicely, they have
all frozen back each winter.
So I'm thinking about Hydrangea macrophylla "Endless Summer", maybe that one
will work for me.

Do you know how long before they bloom if they were seedlings when planted?

Hydrangea paniculata 'Grandiflora' (P-G) I'm pretty sure this is the one
they train for tree hydrangeas.

which one do you have? Some only bloom on old wood, which for us in
zone cold means we will never see a bloom, which is the case in my
varigated one.... but I do have two others that bloom.

I'm still waiting for my hydrangea to bloom. It is about 4 years old
now, I think. Maybe this will be the year?
