Re: Lady Chatsworth News

Jesse,

I've had to miss a lot of messages. Is he a wild/Canada type and she's domestic? If so, from what I remember, that cross is sterile. Eggs are laid, but never hatch. There used to be lots of non-productive nests near the pond on which I grew up. Very sad for the couple, and hard on the Mom who kept setting, trying to bring off a hatch.

Hope the next attempt is more successful.

I thought about that...I can easily get her into a large pen or the side
yard that can be closed off...but he is wild and I don't know about
that. The day her foot was bleeding and I took her into the house for a
couple of hours to doctor her and make sure she was fine, he was
freaking out and flying around looking for her. I think if she decides
to nest in the barn or the stalls like the ducks do, she will be O.K.
She had her nest OUTSIDE the barn door where the dogs, racoons, skunks
could easily get to it. And if it was bad weather...she would have to
sit on that nest no matter what!

That's a shame. Can they be confined for a time?

Well....that is EXACTLY what happened. Her nest (this being her first
year) was not in the safest place. When I went to check on the eggs
last
night they were all GONE and her nest was destroyed. I cried. Dang it.
I
know she will rebuild somewhere else...I just hope it's in a safer
PLACE
this time. I was just crushed.
