Re: Cyclamen

There's a fellow who is making and selling falcon nesting boxes to fruit orchardists to deter the birds that eat cherries etc. I'm wondering if they would catch squirrels? I saw the article in our local paper, but nocontact info. Might be worth a try if you can find plans.

Judy B z 6 Idaho, 55F sunny here, rain on the way. Tulipa tarda, hyacinths, Viola odorata, various narcissus, star of bethlehem, scilla, forsythia blooming. Big buds on the weeping cherry and local plums are blooming. I think it's spring!

Thanks for the tip, sounds like a lot of work, though.
I planted some tulips in the fall and covered them thickly with pine needles and they are coming up.
Our backyard is fenced and walled in because of our pool. So only flying predators can diminish the squirrel population. They seem to know it and are very brazen.
A wildlife specialist told us at a MG lecture that it is illegal in VA to trap and transport squirrels and any other wildlife for that matter. Haven't done it yet, am sure tempted.

Godi, put all squirrel susceptible bulbs in chicken wire boxes and plant
bulbs inside those boxes. The chicken wire hurts the squirrels' paws and
they will leave those protected bulbs alone. I can't tell you how many
tulip bulbs I lost until I started doing this and it really works well.

You're welcome, Kitty.  If the MGs don't know that Cyclamen go
dormant...sheesh!  Well, could be the ones from Ellen are still with
them and they'll find out this fall or poss. they were devoured by
critters or allowed to get too dry or something else.  Cyclamen don't
do well with a lot of other larger perennials growing over top them.
Gotta place them so there's not too much competition.

Interesting that the ones you got from Ellen bloomed last month...what
were they.....C. coum?  Or did you have them inside or something.
