Heinlein worked for my kids. I would also suggest Isaac Asimov, Kayge Baker, Lois McMaster Bujold, Orson Scott Card "Ender's Game", Greg Bear "Blood Music" fascinating and kind of gross, Anne McCaffery the brainship series "The Ship Who Sang," Larry Niven, Arthur C. Clarke, look for Year's Best Sci-Fi collections. Be aware these are edgy, may warrant some prereading so you can discuss the social ideas. I was/am a voracious reader & tend to intenalize the story. Don't know how old or young you mean, but when I was about 14 or 15 I discovered Robert Heinlein's short story "The Green Hills of Earth" in the Saturday Evening Post and was immediately sucked into the world of science fiction.
