Re: hum....

I don't know, Betsy. I've never read "Travels with Charley." I just returned from taking Squinty for a 5 mile ride, which included a traffic jam. She had full range of the truck--front and back--and only spent a few minutes of our tour under my feet. She complained a lot at the beginning, but was pretty well settled down by the time it was over. So I think she'll be a good traveler after a day or so on the road.

About Steinbeck: I read nearly everything he wrote from "The Pastures of Heaven" to "East of Eden" in my teens--and nothing after that, for some reason. Actually, I read "East of Eden" twice. I was stationed on a lighthouse and my MIL sent it to me when it was first published. No sooner had I finished it than Reader's Digest published its bowdlerized version, so I read that, too. It was my first known experience at seeing what good Christian conservatives didn't want us aspirers to middlebrow pretensions to read.

Jim,
Are you going to follow the same route as Steinbeck and Charley?

Awwww...it'll be fine. It will be a good trip. I can tell you are
stressing Jim. You and Squints will have a GREAT adventure on the way to
your new place.

Weather here's passible--mid-70s, no wind to mention. Orchids are
blooming. Squinty and I are almost all packed up and ready to split; I
keep trying to find room in the truck for something and she keeps
fussing because she knows something's afoot but not what.

Tomorrow we start "travel training" for Squinty--putting her in the
truck cab sans cat-carrier and driving around the neighborhood for a
few minutes--to get her used to the idea. Obviously, I want her to
begin to think of the cab as a safe haven so if she escapes while we're
on the road, she'll come right back to be brushed or treated with a
"Greenie."
