Yep, raccoons can be a real problem. Dog doesn't have much of a chance against a full-grown raccoon.

The program we saw on skunks stated that the skunk doesn't really havemuch spray material. So, it will give lots of warnings before spraying. A segment showed a mountain lion interested but it took the warnings andbacked off. A coyote kept pestering the skunk, ignored the warning andgot a spray when it attacked. Our dogs are inside at night so we seldomhave a problem. They have gotten hurt more by raccoons. As long as you have indoor animals, skunks are not a problem. Even if you keep the dogs in at night, it should be all right - in more than 40 years we have never had an animal - this time a cat - sprayed by a skunk. When they walk by at night they really only leave a faint odor. That's a small price to pay for the way they dig out yellow-jacket nests. Now there's a problem - yellow-jackets can do real damage, and a lot of people seem to be allergic to them. (which is against the law because it is their only form of defense in the wild) The guys renting our bunkhouse have trapped 12 of them this spring. They carry rabies, and the weird thing is, rabies will not kill a skunk, but they can be carriers of it. And they stink to high heaven. At three o'clock in the morning they ran our guys out of that house and they threw up from the smell. A couple of them got UNDER the bunkhouse and it must have been two males fighting...but you could smell that for almost a WEEK. They had to air out the house. Infact, rattlers will actually hide from them as skunks will kill them. They will also eat bees and yellow jackets. Don't think I would mind having one around but we have dogs.--------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE GARDENCHAT --------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE GARDENCHAT
