that's funny, kitty. that's my memory of them also. growing in alleys along the alley-side of back fences with their flower spikes sticking up above the fence. maybe those old-timers were on to something. they didn't have to plant anything in front of them to hide the tattered foliage, they just built a fence in front of them.

When I was growing up and my family knew absolutely zip about plants, we called hollyhocks: Alley Flowers. Alleys were the only place I ever saw them and they were plentiful there.
