If tall is the issue there are Canna types that only get a couple of

What about more canna? Or did you say you had enough of that?

I'm sure it is a drainage problem, but what is the difference

This spot used to have pea gravel covering the whole thing (now I
think I
know why!) There is a concrete mow strip around it and I have run
into
some
rock/concrete chunks buried in it too (these have been unremovable
due to
size and proximity to the sidewalk and a brick raised bed. So....
still
need a plan. None of the "cheap" nurseries in the area had
japanese iris-
so I will hunk more tomorrow. There used to be an Iris grower
around
here-=
not sure if they still exist though.

surprised they don't like the wet area. the natives in florida are
called
"swamp lilies" because that's where they grow. somewhere i've got
pictures
of them growing among lotus in a retention pond. maybe it's a
drainage
problem rather than a wet problem.

Well, I'm going to the grocery store now, so we'll see if they

there. But really, I have to rip up more grass if I'm going to

wall
blocks to hold the soil from running right off the slope of the
yard into
the street. I bought 2 5-gallon sized oregon grapes this AM-
they were
only
$11 each. I'm trying to find some iris to try in my wet area out
front.
The yellow callas clearly hate it there- in fact they are
rotting. So on
to
plan B.
Oh, and I clearly am guilty of color scrutiny- I have yanked out
everything
pink that was next to the house out front (they were all given
away, well
except the crepe myrtle tree that I did give away, but it died
anyway)-
clashed horribly with the color brick. Orange should be fine
though-
since
my America rose looks great with the brick.

Ah!, The long-coveted Ornithogalum dubium! Years ago, Van
Bourgondien
showed it in their catalogue as hardy to Zone 3. Couldn't
believe it.
Called and they said "no, that's a misprint." I woner how many
suckers
jumped on that one. FIND a plance for it, Theresa. Nature
doesn't
scrutinize the color wheel, why should you?

Thanks- I should have taken a picture with my hand near it so
you could
tell
how large it is. It really is much different than a star of
bethleham,
sort
of like comparing a dandelion to a dahlia.
I noticed that the grocery store where my husband got this last
year had
vivid orange ones now! I don't really have a place for an
orange one,
but
if I ever see a yellow one, I'm buying it!

Theresa,
Great pics. The ol' Star of Bethlehem has sort of given
Ornithogalums a
bad rap (tend to be invasive) But this is a real beauty! I'll
try to
remember to post a pic of O. magnum when it blooms this year.
