I am not an expert in this area, but I believe they are used after some surgeries to remove blood that has accumulated under the skin (perhaps where blood would interfere with the integrity of a skin graft?) Maggots are still used medically, too. They are better judges of dead tissue than surgeons, and are used to debride (sp?) wounds.
