pruning Hydrangea, mop head

My mop head hydrangea blooms on old wood I know....BUT I am still confused as 
to the proper time to prune.....it would be after the flowering I know but 
how far and when should I prune them back......do they all ways need pruning?  
Or does one prune just for shaping the plant...........
  When should Annabelle be pruned...........
