Re: ok- now doves/predators.

That is so cool! My friend in Jacks Creek has also seen one in her yard. She lives in the middle of 27 wooded acres. I know we have bob cats here in Fayette County.

Zem, we had lunch with my brother-in-law, a policeman, Sunday. He was
telling us about a good sized panther that has been spotted several
times lately on Mud Island. They are around.

Well, I can tell you there are coyotes all over this part of Tennessee.
I
agree with Auralie, I'd love to have cougars, or panthers as they are
called
here. In any case, the deer are way out of control.

Yeah, so far the cougars haven't been a problem for humans here, but
all of the sightings have been in large urban areas well populated
with people. It is a federal crime to kill a cougar in Iowa as it is a

protected species here, but sooner or later, if their population
continues to expand (and there's no reason to believe it won't) some
jackass will take it into their head to go looking for trouble,
because as we all know...some people are just plain stupid. So far,
also, no reports of any problems with cougars preying on livestock,
which in an agricultural state like Iowa, where hogs and cattle are
big business, will not be tolerated at all if it starts. Still, I
imagine a species like coyote once started in an area would probably
progagate pretty quickly, huh? I guess I wouldn't say there are no
coyotes in Iowa...just never seen or heard one wherever I''ve lived,
so I suspect there is a long trapping season for these animals like
there is for so many other predator species here.

Melody, I'd rather have the cougars. First of all, they are
very
shy of humans, and coyotes are not at all shy. There was a
recent case of a man walking a small dog on a down-county
golf
course (usually
forbidden) when the dog was snatched
by coyotes. Add to that,
anything that reduces the deer
population would be a blessing
around
here. There are even
people who advocate reintroducing wolves. Now
that would
be scary!
Auralie

In a message dated

They
believe this is because
of the enormous, disease free deer
population
we have right now.
Hmmm...somehow I think I might prefer coyotes to
