In the farm pond, I cut them off below the water level - they drown.  
In the swamp, I pull them, after I determine they are NOT irises -  
the seedlings look remarkably alike. If all else fails, DH uses  
aquatic Roundup. But...in the farm pond, we do not eradicate, we  
control to one area. Redwing blackbirds use the cattails as a nesting  
site.
