Three to four times the depth of the seed itself, Pam.
Actually, I sow the seeds on the surface of the potting medium and then cover the surface with granite chicken grit to about1/8th inch, then soak from the bottom up... set outside to ride with the weather.

I have never tried to short cut my process. I sow soon as they are ripe,
place the pots out in the cold frame to ride with the local weather. They
germinate the following spring. I am seldom in a bit hurry about
germination....
