Re: Plant Question & Fun at the Nursery

Zem,
The following isn't specifically about your salvia but it's about one collected at the location of its namesake. Since Watermelon is hardy to Z7 and is from Mt. Cerro Potosi, maybe your salvia is too.
Salvia microphylla 'Wild Watermelon'
"Exuberant" best describes the way extra large, deep watermelon-pink flowers dress up this robust, relatively cold resistant Salvia.
Collected by Don Mahoney at 7000 ft. on Mexico's Mt. Cerro Potosi, 'Wild Watermelon' not only boasts boisterously colored blooms with white-marked throats but neat good-looking foliage and a hardy crown that spreads by layering itself. Most abundant in spring and fall and only sporadically over the summer, its high-spirited floral hues invite a glance either spotlighted in a favorite pot, or backed by white blooming Cistus in the mixed border. Zone 6/7.

Blooms May-June & again in September-October.

Size: 3'-4' high x 4' wide; hardy to zone 7.

Subject: [CHAT] Plant Question & Fun at the Nursery

Well, today I worked at the nursery all day, and after I finished shopping for things I wanted I figure I owe Leigh about $20. <LOL> I'll have to give you a list of everything I bought when I figure out what I bought. After work I drove to my daughter's house to give her the 'Romeo' rose I got for her. She gave me a Saliva microphylla 'Cerro Potosi.' I'm sure it is a beautiful shrub, but I can't find any information on it in the US. There are a lot of UK nurseries carrying it, and some in France and Germany as well. I'm afraid it is indigenous to Mexico and will not be hardy here, but I'm going to try it anyway. I have several salvias that are supposed to by hardy to only zone 8, but they have been thriving for about six years in my garden. Does anybody know anything about my gift?
Thanks for your help.
