That is exactly what I did when I first got Crookshanks. It took about two weeks, but he's been one of my most affectionate kitties since the first time he let me touch him. Good luck -- sounds like you are on the right track.

That's what I was planning originally. It's taken a lot of hours and I'm not up to his even coming out from under the tractor when I'm around, though he no longer backs all the way to the back when I peer in and talk to him.

A woman from one of the animal rescue groups called me back last night and encouraged me to catch the kitten in a trap, then keep it in a largish wire dog crate and proceed as described here:

If the kitten is real young, the dogs might not "play" with it. Once you
can hold the kitten, you might try introducing the dogs one at a time. If
they know this is yours, they might not be aggressive.
